why do people write America as hating to read?
Because uh, he doesn’t hate to read at all:
His interests alone would pretty much require that he enjoy reading (science, archaeology, cryptozoology, etc.).
Also his grammar! America’s grammar is corrected ONCE in the strips, and he’s not even actually incorrect. The joke is that England is nitpicking an American English vs. British English thing. America is… obviously using American English, which England objects to.
I’m sure he makes grammar errors occasionally, as normal people often do in casual speech (and I can also buy that he shortens words a lot in texts, as I see done often), but the idea that he can’t spell and doesn’t know the language he’s been speaking for literally hundreds of years very well? :\
